A Season of Hope: Peter Ash’s Christmas Message

Dear Friends,

As we approach the end of another year, I find myself reflecting on the courage and resilience of the people we serve, children and families with albinism in Tanzania. On every trip to Tanzania, I am moved by the resilience of the students and families I meet—individuals who face immense obstacles yet carry on with inspiring strength. Two stories from my most recent trip have especially touched my heart, and I’d love to share them with you.

This September, I had the joy of meeting Sundi, an exceptional young woman and a true inspiration to everyone at Under The Same Sun. Sundi’s journey has been a testament to the power of education and your unwavering support. She joined our sponsorship program as a young girl in 2010, her family struggling with poverty and social stigma simply because Sundi and her siblings have albinism. Despite these obstacles, Sundi has excelled in her studies, recently earning top national scores that secured her a place at Muhimbili University to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.

When I was visiting with our students, her peers couldn’t wait to sing her praises. She is not only a role model but also a symbol of what’s possible when we believe in each child’s potential. Through our program, Sundi has had access to education, healthcare, and a safe environment to thrive—and now, she is on the path to achieving her lifelong dream of serving others as a doctor. As I stood with her, I felt the power of our work in its fullest form. Sundi’s success is proof of how your support can transform lives, not just for one individual, but for entire families and communities.

Yet, my visit to Tanzania also underscored the stark reality of the dangers many children with albinism still face. Meeting Judith, the mother of two-year-old Asimwe, brought me face-to-face with a story of heartbreaking loss. Earlier this year, Judith experienced every parent’s worst nightmare. Her young daughter, Asimwe, was brutally murdered in a violent attack fueled by witchcraft related beliefs that the body parts of people with albinism have supernatural properties. Judith’s grief is unimaginable, yet her strength in facing this loss has become a rallying cry for us to do more. While we celebrate the light and progress in stories like Sundi’s, we must also confront the darkness that still shadows too many lives.

This Christmas, while many of us will be surrounded by loved ones, warmth, and abundance, let us reflect on the safety and security we might often take for granted—a stark contrast to the dangers faced by children with albinism in Tanzania.

Families like Judith’s and students like Sundi need us to stand with them. A gift to Under The Same Sun is more than a donation—it’s a lifeline, offering safety, education, and hope to those who need it most.

If you are able, would you dig deep and join us in this vital work by making a gift today. Together, we can bring light to the darkness and ensure these children know their lives and dreams are worth fighting for.

Donate today to protect and empower students with albinism!

Thank you for making a difference. May this season bring peace, joy, and hope to all, especially those who need it most.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Peter Ash
Founder and CEO, Under The Same Sun
